on conscious underwear
This post includes items gifted to me by Organic Basics.
Sustainable fashion is like an onion. It has LAYERS.
When I began building my conscious closet just over a year ago, I focused on what every capsule closet how-to discussed - stocking up on X number of tops, X number of trousers, X number of shoes … you know how it goes. But by the time I’d sussed out the conscious brands that resonate most with my style, I started to feel a bit uneasy about the fact that I’d be flaunting an ethically made dress and simultaneously wearing a fast fashion bra and underwear beneath. So I decided it was time to invest in some seriously sustainably lingerie ( not sure if that word applies to basics but it sounds nicer than repeating the word ‘underwear’ over and over again. Also I’m not sure why but I really don’t like the word ‘pants’ so don’t expect that in this post ( or anywhere on this blog, really) ) . I started my search and fell in love with one brand in particular - Organic Basics.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, Organic Basics actually reached out to me and asked if I’d like to try out a couple of pieces! I KNOW. I did a BIG happy dance. Don’t worry guys, I played it super cool in my email back to them for minimal fangirling, don’t worry ( maybe ) ( oh God I love them ) . I’ve admired their brand for ages; not only are they 100% my style with their Scandi design and minimalist vibe, but they’re also made in ethical factories with sustainability at the heart of what they do. You can read more about the OB ethos here ( it’s super lovely ) .
Back to my underwear ( wow I never thought I’d be typing that up on here ) . Like I mentioned, much of the discussion about eco-friendly fashion surrounds the wardrobe elements that are seen by the world ( unless you’re super fierce and strut around in your underwear, in which case, YOU GO GIRL ) . Despite the fact that so many brands are now launching conscious collections ( thanks to the rise in demand by consumers ) , one section of the wardrobe that is seemingly consistently ignored in this movement is underwear. I really do believe that, along with socks, it’s one of the most rejected elements of our closets - with dirt cheap replacements readily available on the high street any day of the week, we don’t need to think twice about buying in fancy, made-to-last pairs, right? WRONG.
One of the best ways to trick yourself out of that mindset is by spending more on less - next time you find yourself with a little more disposable income than usual, treat yourself to some quality undergarments ( wow, I’ll literally write anything but ‘pants’ ) . Not only will you be WAY more comfortable and feel like a million bucks every time you get dressed, but you’ll also automatically make sure to take extra care of each one knowing how much you spent and how wonderfully they’re made. Oh, and you’re helping to sort out the state of our planet. Win win ( win ? ) !
Oh, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any more wonderful … the lovely team at Organic Basics created a code especially for you guys to get 10% off anything on their site! Use ‘NATIMOB’ at checkout to save that dolla and get that cute and comfortable bra.
I’d love to hear which areas of your wardrobe you prioritise when it comes to shopping sustainably - let me know over on the Discuss page!
Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
